Recreational ProgramTo a considerable extent, our clientele are institutionalized and have problems taking initiative in recreational opportunities. Most of our residential programs have some type of recreational equipment, such as ping-pong, foosball, weight lifting universal machines, and/or an arts and crafts areas. Our full-time athletic director ensures that every house has regular recreational activities off-site, including cultural events, trips to nearby community centers, field trips and summer programs. In addition, we also have our own boys and girls competitive basketball team, a girls volleyball team and a boys and girls track program. The goal is to offer our residents an array of opportunities to enhance the quality of life. The staff supervises and helps arrange group activities such as hiking, fishing, bowling, rollerblading, basketball, weight lifting, running, swimming, and camping. For these activities all necessary precautions are taken to ensure for the safety of our clients, in accordance with the requirements of the Colorado Department of Social Services - Office of Child Care Services. Individualized activities are also developed for each resident and may include art classes, musicals, singing lessons, making connections with programs like Outward Bound, Outdoor Buddies or a theater company. The recreational program is intended to offer choices and successful experiences, without creating a dependence on the program to entertain the youth. The activities are designed with a specific purpose related to the individual needs of residents and to enhance relationships within the milieu. Third Way Center offers on average three to four recreational activities per week at each of the residential programs, in addition to regular athletic programming at the school.
