Lowry Campus
Third Way Center was granted 1.8
acres on the grounds of the new Lowry Redevelopment Project in east Denver.
In an attempt to complete our continuum of services and be able to offer a more
secured, structured and restrictive environment for younger children, homeless
teens and youth who exhibit more severe mental disorders and behavioral issues,
we are building a residential treatment campus on this acreage at Lowry.
The first of four houses is already open and the remaining three will begin
construction in Spring 2008.
This site will include four residential, ranch style houses
that are welcoming and homelike (not institutional). Each house will
accommodate eight children in their own bedroom. The houses will have lots of
light, central air, a central sound system, an open kitchen/dining area, staff
offices, therapy offices and a classroom for educational services.
The houses will surround a central courtyard area that can be utilized for
recreational space, picnics, and outdoor activities. Two of the houses will be
single sex homes to accommodate children with severe sexual abuse issues.
These children will transition into the other two homes, which will be coed – in
preparation for transition into less restrictive program within the TWC
continuum of services.
This program is much like all of our other programs, teaching
independent living skills while working intensively on the major life issues and
crisis’ which have brought these children to our programs. This program
is more structured, however, with more assessment, diagnostics and higher
staff to client ratio.
The actual building of the first home was made possible through a
generous grant from HomeAid Colorado, the philanthropic arm of the Colorado
Homebuilders Association. Through in-kind donations of materials, labor
and skill, nearly half of the project was
gifted.
